Homeland Security Award
Program Accomplishments
Fiscal Year 2009: As of fiscal year 2009, 16 Homeland Security Awards have been presented. In 2009, the $25,000 Homeland Security Award was presented to James Thomas, American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow and Laboratory Fellow at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Richland, WA. Mr. Thomas was recognized for his leadership in establishing the growing science of visual analytics and associated technology to aid in detecting, predicting, preventing and responding to acts of terrorism and other catastrophic threats. Mr. Thomas is founder and past Director of the Department of Homeland Security National Visualization and Analytics Center. His responsibilities at PNNL include establishing investment directions for Information and Computing Technology (ICT), representing ICT in and outside PNNL, leading major technology initiatives, mentoring staff, and being a Principal Investigator on several major science programs. Fiscal Year 2010: As of 2010, 20 Homeland Security Awards have been presented. In 2010, the eighth annual Homeland Security Awards, sponsored by the public-private partnership of the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation and AgustaWestland North America, will be presented on October 5 in Washington, D.C.
The $25,000 Homeland Security Award in the Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Chemical and Explosive Attacks field is presented to Charles A. Gentile, Head, Tritium Systems, Princeton University - Plasma Physics Laboratory, Princeton, NJ. He is recognized for the development of the Miniature Integrated Nuclear Detection Systems (MINDS), which can identify radioactive materials used in such things as dirty bombs.
The $25,000 Homeland Security Award in the Border and Transportation Security field is presented to Milind Tambe, Ph.D., Professor of Computer Science and Industrial & Systems Engineering, USC Viterbi School of Engineering, Los Angeles, CA. He is recognized for his research in game theoretic algorithms for use in counter-terrorism and homeland security. An example of his work is the Assistant for Randomized Monitoring Over Routes (ARMOR) system deployed at Los Angeles International Airport.
The $25,000 Homeland Security Award in the Cyber Security and Information Sharing field is presented to the FBI Criminal Justice information Services, Clarksburg, WV, for the development and deployment of the National Data Exchange System (N-DEx), a nationwide information sharing system to fight crime and terrorism.
The $25,000 Homeland Security Award in the Emergency Response to Natural and Man-Made Disasters field is presented to Budhendra Bhaduri, Ph.D., Group Leader, Geographic Information Science & Technology,
Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, TN. Dr. Bhaduri is recognized for the development of the LandScan USA database, which can estimate the population at risk during emergency preparedness and saving lives during emergency response. Fiscal Year 2011: There will be four $25,000 in FY 2011.

Applicant Eligibility
This is a competition NOT a grant application.
Individuals/companies compete and their accomplishments are judged on how they are making measurable and constructive contributions related to basic and/or advanced research in the area of homeland security.
Nominees must be involved in the field of homeland security.
In public/private partnership with AgustaWestland North America, the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation will present four $25,000 Homeland Security Awards to advance research and honor individuals or companies pursuing new discoveries in the field of homeland security.
A $25,000 Homeland Security Award will be presented in each of the following four fields: 1) Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Chemical and Explosive Attacks; 2) Border and Transportation Security; 3) Cyber Security and Information Sharing; and 4) Emergency Response to Natural and Man-made Disasters.
Beneficiary Eligibility
U.S. citizens/companies permitted by their employer or any other relevant authority to accept a monetary award bestowed by the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation, a Federal government agency. The individuals/companies will be honored for making measurable and constructive contributions related to basic and/or advanced research in the area of homeland security.

Application Procedures
This program is excluded from coverage under OMB Circular No. A-102. This program is excluded from coverage under OMB Circular No. A-110. All Nominations are received online at: www.ccolumbusfoundationawards.org. Only Nominations that meet the eligibility requirements are accepted. Nominations are accepted from all 50 States. The deadline for Nominations is May 7, 2010.
Award Procedures
The Awards are sponsored by a public-private partnership between the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation and AgustaWestland North America, a global leader in designing, manufacturing and supporting the world"s most technologically advanced helicopters. All Nominations are read by the Foundation Board of Trustees to select the Semifinalists. Nominators are notified of the Nominee"s selection as a Semifinalist and asked to provide background material to support the Nomination. A national Evaluation Committee reviews and comments on the Semifinalist"s background material. The Foundation Board of Trustees and AgustaWestland select the Award winners. The Award will be presented in Washington, D.C. on a date to be determined.
