Multidisciplinary Cultural Resource and Section 106 Projects in SHEN

This announcement is to provide public notice of the National Park Service’s intention to award a task agreement under a previously competed or single source justified master cooperative agreement.

Cooperative Agreement Number

P14AC00657 was entered into by and between the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, (NPS), and James Madison University (JMU) for the purpose of providing students experience in field archeology while conducting cultural resource work and Section 106 compliance at Shenandoah National Park (SHEN).

JMU students, under the guidance of JMU faculty, will perform Phase I archeological surveys and testing for inventory and compliance with Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 196 6. They will prepare individual site reports documenting the methods used, identifying cultural features, site patterning and placement, and interpretation of the site in light of regional studies.

To ensure site location information is correct JMU will share information and work with park GIS staff.

Condition assessments will also be performed on known sites that are listed in the NPS Archeological Site Management Information System (ASMIS).

JMU will work with the park Museum Specialist to catalog artifacts from Old Rag Parking Lot project in the park Interior Collections Management System (ICMS).

They will assist, as needed, in the preparation of interpretive materials for the public based on field and/or laboratory studies.
