The National Institutes of Health, otherwise referred to as NIH, is an agency operating under the United States Department of Health and Human Services that is largely in-charge of pursuing the country's health-related and biomedical research studies.
The programs and activities of the NIH are geared towards the achievement of its mission, which is "to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce the burdens of illness and disability."
In line with this mission, the National Institutes of Health, in collaboration with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), has recently established the International Research Collaboration on Drug Abuse and Addiction Program wherein they seek to solicit collaborative research applications regarding addiction and drug use, through the utilization of special opportunities and resources that exist outside the United States of America.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse firmly believes that the power of science is more than capable of discovering a breakthrough in drug use and addiction. NIDA has launched the International Program wherein it:
a) Benefits from unique opportunities that are capable of advancing scientific knowledge through research
b) Address the impacts of addiction and public health in a global scale
c) Successfully disseminate and pass on their discoveries to research to scientists, treatment providers, and policy makers all over the world.
Under the International Research Collaboration on Drug Abuse and Addiction, the activities that will be supported by the international program includes:
